MUSIC WITH CHILDREN AND YOUTH Music is such an important part of our worship and our lives. We at IUCC are so fortunate to have our wonderful Music Director, John St. Marie, ready and excited to work with our children and youth in this immensely valuable endeavor. All children up into junior high are welcome in the Children’s Choir. Youth in high school are invited into the Handbell and Chancel Choirs.
Sunday, Oct. 17 – Youth Sunday! Our junior and senior high youth will design and lead both worship services, including the music. There are many possibilities, including various instruments. Planning will commence soon with Pastor Elizabeth and Music Director John.
Sunday, Dec. 5 – Second Sunday in Advent! The children will be asked to come to church at 9:15am to sing three Advent-themed songs at the close of First Service and then sing them again for the introit, anthem, and offertory in Second Service. The children will begin hearing and learning the music in Nov. in Sunday School with their teachers, then John will rehearse with the children in Sunday School on Nov. 21 and 28.
Sunday, Apr. 17 – Palm Sunday! The Children’s Choir will sing “Hosanna!” with the Chancel Choir at both services. Rehearsals TBA. Committed high school youth will play in a Handbell Choir. John will lead rehearsals on Thursdays from 6-7pm, Mar. 17, 24, 31, Apr. 7, and 14.
Sunday, Apr. 24 – Easter! The youth Handbell Choir will again play in both services.
Sunday, Jun. 12 – Pentecost! The Children’s Choir will sing special selections on their own at both services. Rehearsals TBA. In addition to the dates above, John has also generously offered to work with our children and youth to share music at First Service in general as there is interest.IUCC has three youth groups: a Junior Youth group (4th-6th graders), a Jr. High Youth group, and a Senior High Youth group. The Junior Youth group meets once a month after church, while the two older groups meet weekly Sunday evenings at 5pm until 7pm. Our youth groups have a common goal of providing a safe environment that fosters social responsibility and personal growth. By coupling fun with a friendly family type group we strive to offer the youth of our church and community a place where they feel at home to ask questions, find a few answers, learn, grow, and love one another.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Director of Christian Education at christian.ed@iucc.org.
