Ethics in Wonderland
Dr. Bill Hsiang recently spoke at IUCC to introduce Ethics in Wonderland (EiW), a new initiative addressing the nation’s ethical challenges. EiW uses the metaphor of falling down a rabbit hole to illustrate today’s ethical confusion and invites people of all backgrounds to come together in restoring ethical principles.
The initiative builds on past efforts, such as the 1980s IUSD Values Education program and the Ethics Town Forum featuring Michael Josephson, founder of the Josephson Institute of Ethics. Josephson’s Character Counts campaign, which emphasized core values like respect and responsibility, gained national recognition and bipartisan support. EiW seeks to continue this legacy, encouraging dialogue and solutions that bridge societal divides.

IUCC and University Synagogue Interfaith Volunteer Event
IUCC and University Synagogue Interfaith Volunteer Event on February 6
When we did a survey at our last Women to Women Event with University Synagogue, one of the most requested activities was a joint community service event. That is now happening! University Synagogue is spearheading a Joint Interfaith Volunteer project to help Second Harvest, a wonderful organization that provides food for the needy. The synagogue was given 25 spots to be filled with a combination of volunteers from our two congregations. This opportunity is taking place on Thursday, February 6, 2025 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Second Harvest Distribution Center (8014 Marine Way, Irvine, CA).
LAST CHANCE TO RSVP! The synagogue has asked that we provide them with a list of our volunteers as soon as possible so we have an accurate headcount, so please email tricia_aynes@yahoo.com by that date if you are able to participate. Participants will also need to register individually with Second Harvest no later than January 23 at https://feedoc.volunteerhub.com/vv2/lp/UniversitySynagogue/event/ca6b274c-cb1a-4e5c-af3b-9ec9fe328fd3
