Ballot Review - 2024
In addition to, ahem, a certain Presidential election, and in addition to choosing winners in a large number of other contests, California has still more work for us to do as we cast votes. We get propositions! Like ‘em or hate ‘em, they’re on the ballot.
For this election season, we have ten propositions on the ballot. Five were put onto the ballot by the Legislature. Another five were put onto the ballot by interested groups and individuals who collected signatures outside of your local grocery store.
The Advocates for Peace & Justice will sponsor a review of these ten questions on Sunday, October 6 at 10:45 a.m. Featured will be descriptions of each of the proposed measures, and a grid showing which groups or parties are in favor of or are opposed to each. Keith Boyum, Professor of Political Science Emeritus has developed these, and they will be posted on the IUCC web site for easy access.
So why October 6? Seems early. Yet California will put ballots for this fall’s election in the mail to all registered voters on October 7 th . Let the voting begin! You see, we no longer have an election day: we have an election season.
So come and hear, and join in on, the discussion on October 6. As always, IUCC has no congregational position on any of the propositions, nor on any of the candidates.

True Believer - Screening
"True Believer" Screening with Panel Discussion event!
Join us at Irvine United Congregational Church for a screening of “True Believer” on Tuesday, September 24 at 6:00pm, followed by a discussion and refreshments. Tickets are $15.
For over 40 years, the Religious Right in the US has proclaimed a patriarchal, anti-LGBTQ gospel, from cross-engraved-pulpits to bunting-laced podiums. “True Believer” explores the origins of this movement, weaving together the larger political intentions at play with Kristen Irving’s story of her own experience within a family deeply committed to their evangelical community. Kristen’s personal story will resonate with many persons who have either found their way out of the evangelical church or have become deeply uncomfortable within it. The details about how this movement was launched will be revealing for many who assume that it was simply a grassroots movement, or “a work of the Spirit.”

Legacy Circle - Estate Planning
Marilyn Smith, LCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has worked over many decades professionally helping clients (and their adult children) as they age, face fears and move towards death. By Marilyn’s report, however, the most profound ‘learnings’ about the emotional, practical and estate related issues came from intimately walking with her parents until their deaths, both in their early 90s. She was also their Successor Trustee for each of their estates, which she found both complicated and “kind of messy.” Come hear from Marilyn all about the little details beyond just estate planning that are so important to address as end of life issues.
Attorney Aaron Davidson, Esq., has 6 years of experience handling continuous probate disputes involving wills, trusts, and conservatorships. In that time Aaron has learned the importance of having one’s plans written down and ensuring that the entire family is on the same page. Since his time in litigation, Aaron has been working in estate planning and conservatorship administration, focusing on getting clients to plan for their futures and do their best to resolve potential family disputes before a crisis arises. Aaron looks forward to helping people make these important decisions because he has seen first hand the difficulties families face without adequate planning.
