ADVOCATES FOR PEACE & JUSTICE
IUCC’s commitment to social justice is deeply ingrained in our mission and values, calling us to take meaningful action in support of people and causes that align with our faith and principles. This includes, but is not limited to, advocating for sensible gun legislation, defending immigrant rights, championing LGBTQ+ rights, providing aid to the unhoused, and standing firmly against all forms of discrimination. We believe that in the face of clear violations of human rights, inaction is not an option.
The role of the Advocates for Peace & Justice at IUCC is to stay informed about public policy issues that impact our community and to empower our members to make their voices heard. Our goal is to ensure that our actions are guided by the teachings of Progressive Christianity, which emphasizes compassion, justice, and the inherent worth of all individuals. Here’s a closer look at what we do:
Review Public Policy Issues: We carefully examine current public policy issues with the intention of taking informed stands that reflect the values of Progressive Christianity. This involves rigorous analysis and thoughtful discussion to ensure our positions are both principled and effective.
Engage the Congregation: We actively invite members of the congregation to participate in advocacy efforts, including writing letters or making phone calls to state and federal legislators. By urging action on important legislation, we help amplify our collective voice in the public sphere.
Energize Social Justice Initiatives: The Advocates work to galvanize the congregation around social justice issues, organizing activities such as marches, candlelight vigils, and other forms of public demonstration. These events serve not only to raise awareness but also to build solidarity within our community and beyond.
Educate Through Election Forums: We provide educational forums to inform our members about upcoming propositions and measures, ensuring that they are well-equipped to make informed decisions at the ballot box. These forums are designed to be accessible and informative, helping to demystify complex issues and encourage active civic participation.
Through these efforts, the Advocates for Peace & Justice at IUCC strive to embody our church’s commitment to social justice, creating opportunities for our congregation to engage in meaningful advocacy and to stand up for what is right. We believe that by working together, informed by our faith and guided by our values, we can make a tangible difference in the world around us.
